Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
Warm greetings! On behalf of GEIDCO, I would like to express our sincere thanks to WMO for kindly inviting us to co-host this event, and extend a big, warm welcome to all guests and friends here! This forum tells us a central truth, we must work together to find co-development path for energy and climate. Without an overall solution, energy transition and climate change goals can not be achieved.
Today, the clean and low-carbon energy transition aimed for climate change goals is speeding up. Our overall solution is to build the Global Energy Interconnection, or GEI, to realize green and low-carbon development. GEI is a new energy system for energy transition by grid interconnection. As a global platform, it can meet the demands for clean replacement in energy production, electricity replacement in energy consumption, large-scale integration of clean energy, wide allocation, and cost-efficient energy use.
Now, focusing on various areas such as generation, grid, load, and storage, I will share some practices promoted by GEIDCO and China in energy transition with you.
First of all, We have scaled up various centralized and distributed renewables.
China has rich clean energy resources for centralized generations in different regions, all with low costs. For instance, the deserts in the north are suitable for developing large-scale wind and solar bases. The rivers in the southwest are suitable for large hydropower bases.
We have introduced the “Desert PV farms”, not only generating solar power but also providing home to plants. This is the model what we called “Green Energy plus eco-protection
GEIDCO introduced P for M model of “Power for mining, metallurgy, manufacturing and market” to create co-development industry chains. This will help developing countries ease their financial, technology and market issues.
In addition to the massive development of clean energy, China is also advancing the distributed generation of clean energy according to local conditions for better energy supply.
Now, over 700 counties in China are promoting rooftop PV, a total of 160 gigawatts.
In remote areas, GEIDCO is the first to propose a plan for new grid-high renewable system. We aim to meet all local power demands with clean energy, and protect the environment. This program is under progress
The second is to build a strong power grid that is interconnected and efficient. This can be achieved by enhancing power grids across regions, building a strong and smart grid with ultra-high-voltage (UHV) grids as the main grids, to achieve optimized large-scale allocation of resources.
Now, 37 UHV projects have been deployed in China, adding the inter-regional transmission capacity to 300 gigawatts. I want to highlight the ±1100 kV UHV Zhundong-Wannan project from West China to East China. In the past four years, with a capacity of 12 gigawatts, it has transmitted over 650 TWh of electricity over its 3,300 kilometer transmission line.
Thirdly, China is promoting smart energy use system. We have increased the use of electricity in the whole society, including transportation, industry, buildings and our daily lives. At the same time, we are also promoting digital and smart upgrade to meet flexible, diversified, and convenient needs.
China is replacing fossils with electricity, promoting EVs, electric heating, e-harbor, and so on. China’s EV fleet is bigger than 16 million. The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) has established a Smart EV platform, connecting over 2 million charging poles.
The fourth is to build a multi-energy and flexible energy storage system. Non-stable generation of renewable power poses higher requirements for power system adjustment when grid is connected at a large scale. Thus, energy storage is a necessary choice.
Right now, China is planning to construct a number of pumped storage power plants with a total capacity of 120 gigawatts. The commissioned Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station is the world’s largest, with a total installed capacity of 3.6 gigawatts. It has a full storage capacity of 40 gigawatt-hours.
Furthermore, for regions lacking both hydro resources and energy, GEIDCO invented a new model of pumped hydro storage to combine the function of water diversion and supply. It thus has a bright future for worldwide application.
Ladies and Gentlemen!
GEIDCO’s mission is to build a win-win, open and sharing international energy platform. To achieve that, we have constructed a global network and wide partnership. with 1,305 members from 142 countries. GEIDCO has released over 80 research reports. GEI has been listed in the UN HLPF for six years. The GEI-based carbon-neutral solution has been written in the IPCC report. Looking forward, we are ready to work with WMO, Huawei and other stakeholders to jointly promote energy-climate co-development. Let us join hands and work towards GEI, towards global energy transition, and towards a sustainable future for all!
Thank you!
