The United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (UN HLPF) is scheduled to take place from July 10th to 19th in New York, USA. As part of the official program, a thematic-event focused on "Jointly Build a Zero-Carbon Energy System to Further Advance the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York on July 13th, from 18:30 pm to 20:00pm. This event, jointly organized by the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UNSDSN), and the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET), aims to fully realize the objectives outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It will facilitate in-depth discussions on the establishment of a global energy interconnection and present research findings in this regard. Esteemed participants will include senior executives of the United Nations, governments, international organizations, industry enterprises, and research institutions.
Achieving sustainable development is a shared vision among all countries. Energy is the "lifeblood" of modern economy and society, providing the essential driving force for sustainable development. The current fossil fuel-dominated energy system is simply unsustainable. There is an urgent need to accelerate green and low-carbon energy transition. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all UN Member States in September 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, covering 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from economic, social and environmental aspects. During the UN Sustainable Development Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) initiative as a solution for accelerating energy transition and sustainable development of humanity, receiving high acclaims and extensive responses from the international community. The UN Secretary General António Guterres remarked that GEI is key to the realization of inclusive and sustainable growth worldwide.
Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) has carried out in-depth research on key issues related to sustainable development. Its latest findings is compiled in a research report titled Global Energy Interconnection --- Pathway Towards 2030 Sustainable Development, which expounds on the role of GEI in advancing sustainable development, covering 9 major aspects, i.e. clean energy development, grid interconnection, electrification progress, secure and affordable power supply, pollution reduction and carbon emissions mitigation, technology and mechanism innovation, industrial development and employment, electric power investment and trade, and platform for international cooperation. The report reveals that GEI has an overall and fundamental role in promoting the realization of the 2030 Agenda, with a number of specific actions and cooperation mechanisms proposed. It is hoped that this report could offer a global pathway for the comprehensive implementation of the SDGs and the advancement of sustainable development of energy, economy, society, and environment.
